Someone asked me recently how I would describe my style of fashion.
I grew up out in the country, and spent much of my time playing outdoors. Although I wouldn’t say I dressed like a tomboy, I also didn’t wear name brand, high fashion items on a daily basis because it wasn’t practical when you’re playing in the woods and in the creek all day. I also live in a male-dominant family: I am a wife to a husband, and have multiple sons, a dad, and three brothers. My environment and upbringing are very influential and I’m thankful for how God has shaped my life. You can see those same influences in how I dress. For me, my favorite outfits consist of a mix of feminine and masculine influences.
What does your style communicate about your values and personality? One of the key pillars of my fashion is modesty. I remember when I was in my early 20s, a single guy I went to church with came up to me and thanked me for not dressing in a way that causes guys to stumble. He said that when he was around me, he could relax and enjoy friendly conversation and not be working tremendously hard to guard his thoughts and heart. Frankly, it shocked me and opened my eyes a bit more to the life of Christian guy, and I was super humbled by his words.
I’m not saying I do it perfectly. I’m not saying I’ve made mistakes. I’m NOT saying I’m the standard. What I am saying is that modesty is something to think about if you are a Christian woman seeking to live your life to love God and love others (Mark 12:30-31). And if you are a Christian who doesn’t choose modesty, maybe consider asking yourself why. One way to take a step in this is ask yourself, “What is most loving to guys I’ll be around?” when you choose your swimsuit this summer.
“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.”
-Jesus (John 15:12)
